Laser Gummy Smile Treatment

Transform your smile through laser gummy smile treatment in Singapore

What Is A Gummy Smile?

A gummy smile occurs when too much gum tissue is visible above the upper teeth when smiling, creating a disproportionate appearance.

While gummy smiles do not harm oral or overall health, many people seek cosmetic procedures for it. Laser gummy smile correction is a popular option to enhance the appearance of your smile.

Causes of Gummy Smile

Abundant Gum Tissue

Excessive gum growth can result from genetics, certain medications, or hormonal changes. This leads to more gum visibility when smiling, often creating a disproportionate gum-to-teeth ratio, resulting in a gummy smile.

Poor Jaw Alignment

A misaligned jaw can cause the upper lip to rise higher when smiling, exposing more gum tissue. Conditions like an overbite or jaw protrusion may contribute by altering the position of the teeth and gums, making the smile appear gummy.

Gum Infection

Chronic gum inflammation or infections, such as gingivitis, can cause the gums to swell and look more prominent. If left untreated, these infections can worsen over time, increasing the gummy appearance and posing serious oral health concerns.

Teeth Wear

Worn or eroded teeth from bruxism or ageing can make teeth appear shorter, exaggerating gum visibility and creating the illusion of a gummy smile.

In such cases, laser gummy smile treatment isn’t the only option; tooth crowns can also help by restoring the length of the teeth.

Benefits of Laser Gummy Smile Treatment

Enhanced Precision

Laser technology offers a high level of precision. Accurate incisions with the laser can remove excess gum tissue with minimal damage to surrounding areas.

Quicker Recovery

The laser cauterises as it cuts, promoting faster healing and reducing the need for sutures. Most patients experience a smoother recovery process compared to traditional surgical methods.

Reduced Pain and Side Effects

Laser treatment involves minimal pain, often performed while the patient remains awake and comfortable. Additionally, the laser minimises swelling and infection risk, resulting in less discomfort and fewer complications.

Local anaesthesia is then applied to numb the treatment area.

FAQs About Laser Gummy Smile Treatment

Laser gummy smile treatment is typically painless. A local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area, ensuring you remain comfortable during the procedure.

Mild discomfort may occur after the procedure, but severe pain could indicate a problem. If you experience severe pain after the procedure, contact your dentist immediately.

Facial exercises may strengthen the muscles around the mouth and reduce gum exposure when smiling. One such exercise is holding a smile for a few seconds and gently pulling the upper lip down with your fingers. However, while these exercises can help slightly improve the appearance of a gummy smile, they are not as effective as professional treatments.

Botox injections can temporarily relax the muscles that control the upper lip, reducing the amount of gum visible when you smile. Surgical options like crown lengthening can reshape the gums for a more balanced appearance. Braces may also help in some cases, particularly for teeth that haven’t fully erupted or for those with a shorter upper lip relative to the gums.

Veneers can make teeth appear longer but cannot directly reduce a gummy smile. However, combining veneers with laser gum contouring can enhance the overall aesthetic appearance.

Braces themselves do not cause gummy smiles. However, patients with traditional braces may struggle to brush and floss effectively, leading to bacterial buildup around the gums. This buildup can cause gum inflammation, making a gummy smile more pronounced if left untreated.
