Invisalign First

Give your child a confident start with Invisalign First, the aligner for kids

What is Invisalign First?

Invisalign First is an orthodontic clear aligner treatment designed to help children improve their smiles as they grow.

Typically, children between the ages of 6 and 10 are at an ideal stage to begin orthodontic treatment as they are still growing. Starting treatment at this age enables dentists to address and rectify dental issues early on, preventing them from escalating into more severe conditions.

With Invisalign First, your kid can undergo orthodontic treatment with minimal disruptions to their daily lives.

Invisalign First offers a comprehensive solution tailored for kids and addresses an array of dental conditions including:

  • Overcrowding

Insufficient space in the jaw can cause teeth to huddle together, overlap, or even twist. They could jut forwards or backwards because of this tight squeeze.

  • Overjet

Often referred to as “buck teeth,” an overjet is when the upper front teeth jut out far beyond the lower ones horizontally. It is different from an overbite, where the top teeth overlap the bottom ones vertically.

  • Underbite

This happens when the lower teeth and jaw push out past the upper teeth. In pronounced cases, an underbite might hinder chewing and affect your child’s speech.

  • Crossbite

With a crossbite, some of the top teeth end up behind the lower ones. Over time, this misalignment might lead to uneven tooth wear or even chipping of the teeth.

  • Open Bite

An open bite is characterised by a gap between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed. It can affect your child’s appearance and may result in speech quirks like a lisp.

  • Spacing

When noticeable gaps exist between several teeth, it is referred to as spacing. These gaps can affect speech clarity and trap food.

Some parents might think that early orthodontic treatment is extreme or unnecessary. However, starting treatment early is in your child’s best interests especially if the problem is one that could become more serious over time if left untreated.

As your child is growing, early intervention allows the dentist to intercept and help mitigate any potential developing problems related to their teeth and jaw.

  • Helps avoid the need for surgery

Early orthodontic treatment helps with mitigating the severity of skeletal malocclusion (misalignment of the teeth and bite). This helps your child to potentially avoid the need for surgery when they grow older.

  • Increases your child’s confidence

Correcting your kid’s smile helps them to avoid being teased for his/her crooked teeth, boosting their self-confidence.

  • Keeps the teeth healthy and clean

Crooked teeth can make brushing and flossing difficult for your child. With straighter teeth, their cleaning routine becomes simpler, reducing the risk of plaque accumulation and potential tooth decay or gum disease.

  • Corrects bite problems

Correcting a crossbite and underbite is often easier when your child is young because their bones are still growing, allowing for easier adjustment.

It is important to note that early orthodontic treatment may not be suitable for all children. Please book an appointment with our dentist to understand more.

  • More comfortable

Invisalign aligners are made with SmartTrack material which is developed based on 8 years of research & development, with 260 different materials tested. SmartTrack material makes wearing of Invisalign aligners more comfortable.

  • Barely visible

The aligners are made of clear plastic, making them virtually invisible.

Because of this, you do not have to worry about your child feeling self-conscious about his/her appearance, especially when they are in school.

  • Easily removable

This makes it easier for your child to brush and floss their teeth and maintain better oral hygiene.

  • Fewer dental visits

You only need to bring your child back for review every 8-12 weeks as opposed to putting your child on braces which requires a visit to the dentist every 4 weeks.

  • No dietary restrictions

Your child can continue to eat and drink whatever they want since the aligners are removable.

Your child might be suitable for Invisalign First if he/she has early mixed dentition and typically falls between 6 – 10 years old.

  • Invisalign Dedicated Clinic

i.Dental was appointed in 2014 by Align Technology – the company behind Invisalign as an Invisalign Dedicated Clinic.

This means that we have access to Invisalign technology updates, allowing us to effectively help your child with his smile.

  • Experience and Expertise

i.Dental started treating malocclusion using Invisalign since 2011 and we have completed over 5,327 Invisalign cases to date. Our team of dentists is committed to providing a positive experience for all our patients and helping them achieve their ideal smile.

  • Step 1: First consultation

On your first visit, our dentists will examine your child’s teeth to determine whether he/she is suitable for Invisalign First. Records (x-rays, iTero scans and intraoral photos) will be taken during this visit to allow our dentist to prepare a treatment plan for your child.

  • Step 2: Second consultation

During the second consultation, using an iTero Element Intraoral Scanner, a simulation can be created to show your child how the teeth will look after they complete the Invisalign treatment. Our dentist will then share more about the treatment plan for your child.

  • Step 3: Manufacturing of aligners

The aligners for treatment will be manufactured upon your approval of the treatment plan.

The first down payment ($864 including GST) will be paid before we proceed to order for your aligners to be manufactured.

  • Step 4: Collection of aligners

We will arrange for you to come in to collect the aligners in 4 – 6 weeks’ time.  During this visit, our dentist will teach your child how to wear the aligners and how to take care of them.

The second down payment ($1,620 including GST) will be made during this visit.

  • Step 5: Monitoring of progress

You will be required to bring your child for follow-up appointments every 8 – 12 weeks.

Apart from the visits to the clinic, you can also opt for Dental Monitoring for your child.  Dental Monitoring is an AI-powered technology which allows our dentist to track the progress of your child’s treatment remotely.

  • Step 6: End of treatment

At the end of the treatment, our dentist will take another iTero scan of the teeth of your child to manufacture retainers.

It is important for your child to wear the retainers because as his/her body grows, the teeth shifts naturally. Hence, wearing retainer helps to control this shifting and maintain the teeth positions.

It is essential to note that Invisalign for kids is not covered under MediSave. As it is deemed a cosmetic procedure without the need for surgical intervention, MediSave cannot be utilised for this treatment expense.

For a comprehensive overview of what is covered, check out our MediSave for dental treatments page.

The aligners used in the Invisalign First treatment are made from BPA-free plastic, making them completely safe for your child.

Undergoing Invisalign treatment is generally comfortable for kids. Unlike the noticeable pressure exerted by traditional braces, Invisalign uses clear aligners that apply a more subtle force to guide the teeth into their desired positions.

For particularly challenging orthodontic conditions, braces often offer quicker results. Yet, as clear aligners continually improve, they are becoming better at addressing complex dental concerns. Please speak to our dentists for advice on the recommended treatment option for your child.

Treatment time will vary among patients depending on the complexity of your child’s case. It will take between 6 – 18 months on average.

The aligners need to be worn between 20 – 22 hours each day. They must be worn even when your child is asleep and should only be removed when he is eating or brushing his teeth.

Your child may be required to change his aligners every 7 – 14 days depending on the condition of his teeth.

Please contact us immediately if the aligners break or go missing.

Depending on the condition of your child’s teeth, a replacement may not be required. If your child is ready, all he needs to do is to move on to the next set of aligners.

Your child needs to wear retainers after completing Phase 1 of the treatment while waiting for his permanent teeth to grow.

Retainers should be replaced when they have become discoloured, start to fall apart or no longer fit your child’s teeth.
